IARC401 - THE HOLY SOUL -
The Holy Soul is Trent Marden (guitar/vocals), Sam Worrad (bass), Jon Hunter (guitar) and Kate Wilson (drums) and have been described as “snarling guitars with lazy bluesy vocals one minute and filthy fuck off rock n roll the next” (Mar Garvey, Drum Media).
In 2004 The Holy Soul released their debut EP, ‘Love Has Left The City Limits’, which was recorded direct to cassette in one day and followed a year later with the LP ‘Sign of the The Triangle’, which was cited as one of the top ten albums of 2005 by noted journalist Murray Engleheart. The Holy Soul toured relentlessly in 2006 to promote the release culminating in a jaunt through Europe with Mudhoney , playing 13 shows across six countries.
Over the years, The Holy Soul have also performed as an improvisational backing band for Can’s Damo Suzuki on several occasions. This collaboration has produced a live LP, which was recorded in Melbourne in 2008. The album is due for release next year, and features Dan Luscombe (Drones, Blackeyed Susans) on keys.
This year, along with fellow Australians The Stabs and Mick Turner (Dirty 3), The Holy Soul were selected to perform at Taiwan’s inaugural Music Terminals Festival with a line-up including Ghost, Carsick Cars, Chicks on Speed, White and Tricky, a successful tour of Malaysia followed.
The Holy Soul's new album is called ‘Damn You, Ra’, and it will be released on Illustrious Artists/Shock in late September. The recording sees the band flirt with exotica, doom and Brechtian waltzes; influences which sit alongside more recognisable Holy Soul material. Guests include Ralph Carney (Tom Waits, Jonathan Richman), Rui Pereira (Drones), Loene Carmen and Kate Mara.
